BA in Journalism

4 Year Degree Course
Today’s media and communications environment requires professionals with skills in the areas of writing, reporting, news analysis, public relations, digital media, journalism ethics and communication law.

This course, slated to begin in spring 2018, is ideal for students who favour research, writing for news, reporting on assignments, developing an impressive multimedia portfolio and making connections throughout the industry.

You have the choice of selecting courses or modules, so that your course of study is completed ideally through classes in the daytime but with the flexibility for classes in the evening or on Sundays.

Students have the option of exiting with an Associate of Science Degree award after 2 years of study in this programme.

Course Objective
The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism from the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) is so structured, to give aspiring media practitioners an opportunity to develop the knowledge, analytical skills and techniques used by successful journalists and media communicators.

The curriculum has been designed to include the most current trends, techniques and practices of contemporary media and communication.  

Graduates of this programme will find employment in jobs such as:

  • News Reporter
  • Media Researcher
  • News or Features Editor
  • Journalist (news/sports)
  • Public Relations Specialist
  • Communications Strategist

ACCREDITATION
UCC is a tertiary institution registered by the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ), the official local accrediting body for tertiary education. We are working closely with the UCJ, for accreditation of the B.Sc. degree in Journalism.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • To be unconditionally admitted to complete UCC undergraduate programmes, individuals should possess a minimum of five (5) subjects at the GCE or CSEC level at grades A, B, C or 1, 2, 3 respectively. A CSEC pass at level 3 must have been obtained since 1998.
  • Students with 7 CXCs/GCEs subjects including Mathematics and English Language grades 1 & 2; may be eligible for a 50% discount for the first 2 years (conditions apply).
  • Candidates who have a minimum of 4 CXCs can also apply pending the outstanding CXC subjects or can opt to do UCC replacement courses Core Mathematics, English for Academic Purpose and Fundamentals of Accounting.
  • Mature Entry: Must be working for 5 years or more, at a minimum age of 25 years, Submit academic qualifications, detailed resume, job letter and 3 Professional References.
