The University of the Commonwealth Caribbean invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons to fill the positions of: COUNSELOR

Job Summary

The counselor will act as a support and advocate to students to manage and overcome mental and emotional issues by creating coping strategies. The counselor will listen to students and ask questions to help understand their problems and develop strategies to improve their lives. He/ She will monitor the students for progress and make recommendations or referrals for intervention as necessary. The counselor will work with individuals and groups and will help provide community resources for students.

Duties and Responsibilities (includes but not limited to the following)

  1. Conduct individual counselling and group counselling as required.
  2. Engage students to discuss experiences and emotions.
  3. Evaluate students through conversations, interviews, and observations to determine mental and emotional well being.
  4. To determine the most suitable tool or option for individual evaluation.
  5. The ability to analyze and determine the need for external intervention. 
  6. Assisting students to identify goals and objective through counselling sessions/ discussions.
  7. Assisting students through difficult decisions, life changes and challenges.
  8. Educating the students on strategies and coping skills.
  9. Engaging parents/guardians/support system to implement strategies that will amplify positive and holistic results.
  10. Referring parents/guardians/support system to external resources like psychiatrists, treatment facilities, or community services as necessary.
  11. Maintaining good working relationships with support networks, UCC Academy staff and students, as well as community resources etc.
  12. Helping students with a variety of issues such as substance abuse, bullying, anger management, depression, relationships, stress, suicide and other issues.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in related field; Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Clinical mental health counselling, marriage, and family therapy, or a related mental health field, from an accredited institution accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs
  • Completion of an internship program under the supervision of a licensed professional institution counselor preferred.
  • 1 – 2 years of classroom teaching experience preferred
  • Must pass a criminal background check
