This course will give students the opportunity to develop fundamental skills in reading and communicating in the English language. The focus will be on the understanding and utilization of the basic concepts of English grammar, mechanics, usage and the interrelationships between them. Students will also be exposed to the core principles and practices of reading comprehension and analysis, and the writing process as a means of improving their competence in the use of the English Language. Finally, students will be exposed to the two main discourses of writing, namely at the University level

At the end of the course, students will be able to: 

• Review and analyses the rudiments of English grammar, mechanics, and usage by identifying and correcting grammatical errors.
• Answer objective type assessment questions about the required structure and components of expository essay for the tertiary level. 
• Develop the necessary reading comprehension, communication skills and aptitudes which will enable students to read a comprehension passage analytically and critically.
• Identify main and supporting details and summarize a text effectively. 
• Produce clear and well-structured expository essays at the tertiary level.
