Course: Corporate Social Responsibility and the Environment

Course Code: DEVM6001
Credit Hours: 3
Pre-requisites: None

This module examines institutions and businesses as playing an integral part in fostering a safe socio-economic and physical environment. The Caribbean region is confronted with an increasing intensity of natural disasters and the consequences are increasingly being felt among business communities and the wider society. Hence it is becoming more appreciated that the survival of the economies of Jamaica and the Caribbean will be largely dependent on the acknowledgement of the mutual responsibility of government, businesses, and civil society to confront the threats associated with natural, as well as man-made hazards. It is not enough for managers simply to protect business operations at their own sites because sustainable capital accumulation depends largely on a broader socio economic and physical environment which is relatively safe from the impact of hazards. Hence, the important element of corporate social and environmental responsibility should be an integral part of the preparation of business continuity and planning.
