The University of the Commonwealth Caribbean invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons to fill the position of External Examiner

JOB SUMMARY

The External Examiner is to ensure that the academic standards of UCC awards are comparable to those of similar awards in other tertiary institutions, and also that examinations and other assessments are fair and in accordance with university procedures. External Examiners are persons in Academia, qualified Practitioners with the requisite experience in industry, who play an important role in supporting the institution’s Internal Quality Assurance Mechanisms (IQAM).

1. Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities of the External Examiners are to ensure the required standards of the academic program(s) are maintained. In order to carry out the assigned duties and responsibilities the External Examiner must be able to:

Standards - Defend the standards of the UCC, mainly establishing whether or not a particular course is delivering academic standards broadly in line with those of other higher education (HE) institutions. Impartially evaluate question papers, and students’ marked assessments without being influenced by previous: - examiner/lecturer comments; association with the course, staff, or any student

Approved Regulations - Ensure assessments are conducted in accordance with approved program regulations. Evaluate and approve form and content of proposed examination papers, coursework and other assessments that count toward the award of a degree. This is in order to ensure that all students will be assessed fairly in relation to the course syllabus and regulations as well as to verify whether the objectives of the programs have been fulfilled.

Exam Moderation - Required to moderate marks awarded by internal examiners and to adjudicate should there be internal disagreements with internal markers.

Benchmark - Compare/benchmark and report on students’ performance with that of their peers on comparable courses of higher education (HE) at colleges and other Universities.

Proposed Changes - Be consulted and provide feedback on any proposed changes to the approved assessment regulations which will directly affect students currently on course.

Expert Advice - Be willing to provide expertise advise on an academic program/course and/or student assessment where necessary as required to Internal Examiners/Head of Department who may need such expertise guidance.

2. Qualifications, Experiences & Skills:

A master’s or Ph.D. in the field of Information Technology, Law, Mathematics, Humanities, Accounting, Taxation, Business Administration, Management, Entrepreneurship, Logistics…..

Substantial experience in the field often with at least five (5) years in academia, industry, or a combination of both.

Experience in teaching or training at a higher education level, especially if the role involves assessing academic programs or courses.

Relevant professional certifications or memberships in the above-mentioned field.

Recognition or awards within the industry or academic community would be an asset.

Effective written and oral communication skills are crucial for providing clear and constructive feedback to the examined individuals or entities.

Must have a sound understanding of examination processes, assessment methodologies, and grading systems relevant to the specific context of the role.
