THANKS FOR THIS MOST POWERFUL AND SIGNIFICANT AWARD- Adam Stewart

“Humbled and Honoured  “: is how Adam Stewart described the reaction of his father, , Hon Gordon “ Butch’ Stewart on being advised in 2019 by the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean ( UCC), that he would be conferred with an Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there was no Commencement Ceremony in 2020 and the degree was conferred instead, posthumously at the UCC 2020/21 Virtual Commencement Ceremony on July 18, 2021.

Addressing the ceremony Mr Adam Stewart, referencing his father’s  death in January, 2021,  noted “ although Dad isn’t here to see this, I know he was tremendously happy to receive this honorary degree and the family humbly and graciously  accept on his behalf.”

He continued: “ Gordon Butch Stewart was committed to Jamaica and the Caribbean. Everything he did, every decision he made and the businesses he created were underpinned by a passion for the development of Jamaica and the Caribbean region to it’s limitless potential. He had an undeniable knack for business and so it is incredibly fitting that this degree is for Business Administration.”

Noting that Butch Stewart’s love  for Tourism was only rivaled by his passion for education and life long learning, Adam Stewart said “ he believed we must give back to our communities and invest in our team members and training has been a founding value of Sandals. Dad believed in the power of education to change and transform lives  and I know he would have been an ambassador for the UCC.”

Pointing to the establishment of the Sandals University and Butch Stewarts ascendency “ from selling ac units from his car to building the world’s largest all inclusive company” Adam Stewart said “ this degree from the UCC further legitimizes the memory of a man who was nothing short of a pioneer and a trailblazer- a dreamer who believed in the power of dreams and a doer who believed in the power of action. “
