UCC obtains Candidacy Status for Institutional Accreditation and welcomes UCJ for week-long visit

Kingston, June 24, 2019 – The University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) today welcomes a team of assessors from the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ), following its recent award of Candidacy Status for Institutional Accreditation.

Institutional Accreditation is the status granted to an institution that has been found to meet or exceed established standards for educational quality.

The team of local and international experts in tertiary education will conduct a week-long visit, including tours of the institution’s Main Campus in Kingston, its Oxford Terrace Campus and its regional campuses in May Pen, Mandeville, Ocho Rios and Montego Bay. During the visit, the assessors will also meet with the University’s Executive body, Board of Directors, Academic Council, Heads of Schools and Departments, students, alumni and other relevant stakeholders.

“The purpose of this visit is to evaluate our readiness for institutional accreditation, with a focus on quality assurance, institutional effectiveness, internal and external customer service, as well as the relationship between the vision and mission of the University,” said Professor Bernadette Warner, Executive Vice President, Academic Affairs at UCC.

Institutional Accreditation is granted for a maximum period of seven years. During this time, there is continued monitoring of the institution by UCJ to ensure that the standards for accreditation are maintained and that measures to improve the quality of programmes are being implemented.

“I hope that by early 2020, UCC will receive the news that our application for Institutional Accreditation has been granted,” Professor Warner added.

UCC is the largest non-affiliated privately owned university in Jamaica. The institution is internationally accredited by the UK based Accreditation Services of Independent Colleges & Universities (ASIC).
