New UCC Chancellor Prof. John MacIntyre Sharing Expertise in AI

Kingston, Jamaica, April 3, 2025 — The University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) begins a new era of dynamic leadership with Professor John MacIntyre as its new Chancellor. Known for his pioneering contributions to artificial intelligence and innovation, Prof. MacIntyre is set to launch initiatives that will enhance educational practices, support Jamaican students, and energize the local workforce.

Successor to the distinguished Former Governor General Professor Sir Kenneth Hall, Prof. MacIntyre carries a remarkable legacy from his tenure as the Pro Vice Chancellor at the University of Sunderland, UK. With over three decades of experience and over 200 scholarly papers in the realms of AI, computer science, and engineering, his expertise is expected to significantly enrich UCC’s curriculum, particularly in science and technology.

Central to his mission is the integration of AI technologies into UCC’s programmes, aiming to cultivate a tech-savvy graduate pool ready to meet the challenges and opportunities of a digitized global economy. He shared, “Our aim is to place UCC graduates at the forefront of the global AI revolution. By integrating advanced AI education, we’re preparing our students to lead with innovation and integrity in a digital economy.

Professor Colin Gyles, CD, President of UCC, has expressed great optimism about the future under Prof. MacIntyre's guidance, stating, “Professor MacIntyre's vision for integrating AI into our curriculum is both timely and essential. His expertise aligns with the growing global demand for AI skills, and under his chancellorship, UCC will set new standards in academic and professional excellence.
