Spotlight on Cybersecurity at the UCC NCB Rickert Allen Memorial Lecture with the theme ‘Think Like a Hacker’

April 24, 2024 - Cybersecurity takes the spotlight at the fourth annual Rickert Allen Memorial Lecture on Wednesday. Under the theme ‘Think Like a Hacker: Safeguard your digital assets ‘, the event promises a deep dive into the realm of digital protection.

National Commercial Bank Jamaica Limited (NCB) and the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) is hosting the lecture in honour of the late Dr Rickert Allen, a well-respected senior executive who served at both institutions.

Led by Rory Ebanks, Director of Cyber and Information Security, Symptai Consulting Limited, the ‘Think Like a Hacker’ lecture is geared towards enlightening the public on the sophistication of the digital ecosystem and its actors and will offer exclusive insights and valuable pointers from the perspective of an ethical hacker in order to safeguard their digital assets.

The lecture will be followed by a panel discussion with a cadre of esteemed professionals including Dane Nicholson, Head of Fraud Prevention, NCB; Superintendent Warren Williams, Cybercrimes Division, Jamaica Constabulary Force; and the University College of the Caribbean.

“Cybersecurity is paramount in today’s digital age,” said Nicholson.

“In 2023, Jamaica faced a staggering 43 million cyberattack attempts. It should be noted that nearly half of these attacks used common Microsoft Office files to breach systems. This underscores the urgent need for heightened awareness and protection. The Rickert Allen Memorial Lecture serves as a vital platform to educate and empower individuals and organisations to defend against these evolving cyber threats,” Nicholson said.

Professor Colin Gyles, President of the UCC, stated that the lecture’s focus on cyber security reaffirms the university’s commitment to advancing cybersecurity education.

“This year’s memorial lecture, underscores our dedication to fostering knowledge and innovation in this critical field. From the inception of our Bachelor of Science in Networking with Cyber Security in 2019, to the recent introduction of our Master of Science in Cyber Security and Data Privacy Protection programme, we have remained committed to equipping our students with the skills and knowledge essential for navigating the complexities of the digital world.”
