State of the University Address 2023

 

'There will be challenges but also days of glorious victory' — Dr Haldane Davies

 

The year 2023 will have challenges but also glorious victory based on plans to expand the footprint of the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC), its President Dr Haldane Davies has forecast.

Delivering his "State of the University" address at their main campus in Kingston on January 13, Dr Davies reported on the advances made by the UCC in 2022 and plans for further growth and development in 2023.

"The UCC has accomplished great things since its inception. As times change and opportunities expand, we have even greater heights to achieve. I am truly thankful for you and the potential that you possess to traverse the unbeaten path, create new access points, and propel this university from good to great," he told faculty and students.

Dr. Sheilah Marion Paul, a United States (US)/Caribbean educator, has been named Provost of the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC). Dr Paul's career has seen her making her mark in Trinidad and Tobago and elsewhere in the region. She has spent the past 15 years on a professional journey, moving from instructor to lecturer, assistant professor, associate professor, and professor of education at prestigious US universities.

In making the announcement Dr Haldane Davies, president of the institution of higher education said that "the UCC is immensely pleased to welcome a daughter of the Caribbean who has distinguished herself as an educator throughout the Caribbean as well as in the United States of America."

Kingston, Jamaica, Jan. 20, 2022 - University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) student Shanelle McPherson is among twelve specially selected participants for the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names & Numbers (ICANN) annual forum in Cancun Mexico, March 11-16, 2023. The NextGEN ICANN Programme at the ICANN76 Community Forum will feature both face to face and virtual participation.

Shanelle, 27, a first-year student of the UCC studying towards a BSc in Networking with Cybersecurity said, she is "elated to be representing the UCC and Jamaica at the forum and to participate and learn as much as possible about making the internet a safe and secure place for all who use it."

She will be presenting a paper titled "The Impact of Cybersecurity on Jamaica's Banking System".

UCC Partners With Anti Money Laundering Financial Crimes Institute

Kingston, Jan. 16, 2023 - THE University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding as a Partner with the Anti Money Laundering and Financial Crimes Institute (AMLFC) to offer an Anti- Money Laundering and Financial Crimes Prevention Certificate programme.

The MOU proposes the offering of a universal Anti- Money laundering (AML), Countering the Financing of Terrorism (CFT) and Financial Crime Prevention (FCP)  education programme as well in the Turks and Caicos Islands, the Bahamas, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands,contribution to the setting up of education standards in these areas which will be recognized worldwide, the conducting of research on the efficacy of related regulations and advising of improvements that can be made.
