This policy outlines how the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean collects, uses, stores, protects, and discloses personal data through its websites and online services.

Purpose

This Website Privacy Policy sets out how the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) collects, uses, stores, protects, and discloses personal data obtained through its websites and online services, in accordance with the Data Protection Act, 2020 (Jamaica) and UCC’s Data Protection Policy.

Scope

This policy applies to all UCC websites, web pages, landing pages, digital forms, and related online services that collect or process personal data on behalf of UCC. It applies to personal data collected from website visitors, prospective students, students, alumni, staff, and other users who engage with UCC through these digital channels.

The University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) is headquartered at Worthington Avenue, Kingston, Jamaica. UCC is a Data Controller for personal data processed via its websites and online services. UCC’s Data Protection Officer (DPO) can be contacted at:

How This Policy Relates to UCC’s Data Protection Policy

This Privacy Policy should be read together with UCC’s Data Protection Policy (March 2017; Revised June 2024). Where there is any conflict, UCC will comply with the Data Protection Act, 2020 (Jamaica) and the UCC Data Protection Policy.

What Personal Data We Collect and How We Collect It

We collect information when you register on our sites, complete forms, use live chat, open a support ticket, provide feedback, sign up for newsletters, make a purchase, respond to surveys or marketing communications, browse the site, or use certain features. The data may include name, email address, mailing address, and phone number.

Why We Use Your Data

We use personal data to improve our websites and services, respond to customer service requests, administer promotions or surveys, send emails about orders, products, and services, and follow up after correspondence via live chat, email, or phone.

We do not sell or trade your Personally Identifiable Information. We may share it with trusted service providers who operate our website, conduct business, or serve users, provided they agree to keep the information confidential in a manner compliant with the Data Protection Act. We may also disclose information to comply with the law, enforce site policies, or protect rights, property, or safety. Non-personally identifiable visitor information may be shared for marketing or analytics. Any third party with access to personal data must be under appropriate confidentiality and data-protection commitments consistent with UCC policy.

International Transfers

Personal data transfers outside the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean are restricted and require appropriate safeguards such as adequacy decisions, Standard Contractual Clauses, or Binding Corporate Rules, as set out in UCC’s Data Protection Policy.

The UCC’s websites may contain links to third-party sites and resources. These links are provided for the information and convenience of users only. The UCC does not control, endorse nor assume responsibility for such content. Use of external sites is at the sole risk of users and such sites are not covered by this Policy.

Security

Personal information is stored on secured systems with access restricted to authorised personnel. Sensitive information is encrypted in transit (e.g., SSL). UCC implements organisational and technical measures such as password protection, device encryption for data leaving premises, network security, role-based access, regular testing, and secure storage of paper records to protect data against unauthorised access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction.

Retention

UCC retains personal data only for as long as necessary for the purposes collected, or to meet legal or regulatory obligations, in line with UCC’s Data Retention and Disposition Policy referenced in the Data Protection Policy. Secure disposal is required once retention periods end.

Your Rights

Subject to applicable law, you may have the right to: request access to your personal data; request rectification, erasure, or restriction; object to processing (including direct marketing); receive your data in a portable format; and not be subject to decisions based solely on automated processing that significantly affect you.

How to Make a Data Subject Request

To exercise your rights or to make a Data Subject Access Request, email the DPO at
dataprotectionoff@ucc.edu.jm. UCC aims to respond within 30 days and will verify your identity before providing information.

Marketing Emails and Unsubscribing

If you receive marketing emails from UCC, you may unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of each email or by contacting us. UCC will honour unsubscribe requests promptly.

Children

UCC does not specifically market to children under age 13 via its websites.

We will update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be posted on this page.
