The Thompsons turn shared UCC journey into family empowerment and legacy
Michael Thompson and Venetia Darling-Thompson graduates from the Commonwealth Executive Master of Public Administration (CEMPA) programme at UCC.
KINGSTON, Jamaica - Friday, July 31, 2026: When Michael Thompson and his wife, Venetia Darling-Thompson crossed the graduation stage at the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean’s 2026 Commencement, they celebrated more than the completion of their degrees. The achievement represented a shared journey of perseverance, partnership and family empowerment.
The Thompsons completed the Commonwealth Executive Master of Public Administration programme together, supporting and motivating each other through demanding classes, assignments and competing responsibilities. Michael shared that having his wife as a fellow student provided constant encouragement, accountability and mutual support, particularly during the programme’s most challenging periods.
“Our decision was influenced by our shared commitment to personal and professional development and our desire to support each other throughout the journey”, he said. He added that UCC’s reputable programmes and flexible learning environment made the University a suitable choice for them both.
For Venetia, crossing the stage while knowing that her husband was celebrating the same milestone was an unforgettable experience. She described the moment as an “over-the-moon feeling” and recalled listening eagerly for Michael’s name to be announced. “I was even more overjoyed for him than for myself”, she said.
The decision to study together began with Michael’s suggestion that they attend classes and complete assignments as partners. Venetia initially laughed and told him that studying again was “for young people” but the couple accepted the challenge and turned their academic pursuit into a family-wide journey. Their three children, two of whom are pursuing undergraduate studies, witnessed the commitment and sacrifice required to reach the finish line.
Michael remarked that his UCC experience strengthened his leadership, critical-thinking and problem-solving abilities. He will carry forward the importance of discipline, collaboration, ethical leadership and lifelong learning as he continues to advance personally, professionally and academically.
For the Thompsons, the achievement has strengthened their confidence, deepened their partnership and prepared them for greater responsibilities and opportunities. More importantly, it has shown their children that meaningful goals can be pursued at any stage of life. Their message is simple: begin the journey, remain committed and ensure that it has “a glorious ending”.
