UCC Achieves UCJ Institutional Accreditation!
KINGSTON, Jamaica: July 12, 2020 --The University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC), Jamaica’s largest private non-affiliated tertiary institution, which was registered as a University College by the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ) in 2007, has recently been granted Institutional Accreditation. This coveted and highly sought-after status makes the UCC, which was formally established just fifteen years ago, as one of only four higher education institutions in Jamaica currently, of the eighty that have been registered with the UCJ, to have obtained such accreditation, to date, joining the University of the West Indies (UWI), the University of Technology (UTECH), and the Northern Caribbean University (NCU).
This decision follows an extensive and intensive application process, and investigative visits by the University Council of Jamaica’s accreditation review teams, including selected international and national higher education leaders, to UCC’s campuses across the island, over the 2018-2020 period, to assess the operations, facilities, academic programs, students, faculty and staff members, as well as the governance and management structure and processes of the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean.
The UCC was also previously awarded international institutional accreditation status in 2017 by the UK-based accreditation body, the Accreditation Service for International Schools, Colleges and Universities (ASIC UK). UCC is therefore now nationally and internationally accredited.
Professor Dennis J. Gayle, UCC President, commented that the institutional accreditation status provided by the University Council of Jamaica represented a well-earned accolade for the continuing quality assurance and enhancement efforts of the UCC community. He added that such formal institutional accreditation processes were inherently and extraordinarily valuable, because of the need for systematic and documented institutional self-assessment, as well as the identification and resolution of gaps observed in internal systems and processes.
In turn, Dr. Winston I. Adams, Founder & Group Executive Chairman, UCC Group, welcomed the attainment of institutional accreditation, remarking that this unique status confirmed that UCC had met very high standards of teaching and learning, student support, planning and evaluation, and information resources. At the same time, Professor Bernadette Warner, UCC’s Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs & Internationalisation, also asserted that “This accreditation will reassure our students and stakeholders that UCC is indeed a great choice, and that they will be provided with excellent teaching, a positive learning experience, and the opportunity to earn valuable, widely recognized qualifications” Professor Warner noted.
