UCC Launches Alternative Dispute Resolution Programme to Build a More Peaceful, Just Society
 
 
 

 

The University of the Commonwealth Caribbean has launched an alternative dispute resolution programme in a bid to help Jamaican communities build and create a more peaceful and just society. Launched on Tuesday March 21, 2023, at the university’s Worthington Ave. Campus, the Quelling Disputes Igniting Solutions (QDIS) Programme is designed to provide effective solutions to the problem of unmanaged conflicts in Jamaica.

The launch was one of a series of events during “ UCC Inauguration Week” leading to the installation of the university’s third President, Dr Haldane  Davies on March 27, 2023.
 
The programme combines teaching and practical activities and simulations to create an interactive and engaging environment and provides a unique opportunity for the UCC to bring together staff, students, corporations and community members to gain knowledge on the importance of alternative dispute resolution and its positive impact on society.

UCC, SportsMax Partnership Affords Athletes Access to Higher Education

 

A Contra-Partnership Agreement signed by the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) and SportsMax Limited (SMAX), the Caribbean leading Sports Content, distributor, broadcaster and production house will see the latter’s staff and young athletes through its content partnerships, benefiting from programmes and scholarships through the UCC.

Signed on March 15, 2023, by UCC President Dr Haldane Davies and Nicolas Matthews, CEO of SMAX, the Agreement will result in the UCC delivering a range of certificate, undergraduate, graduate and post graduate degrees to eligible SMAX nominees in exchange for advertising opportunities on SMAX which provides advertisement, production and broadcast services and cable facilities across the Caribbean and in the Diaspora.

UCC Celebrates Women's History Month 2023

 

The University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) has hosted a series of activities and will roll out several features acknowledging women in the community as part of their International Women's Day 2023 and Women's History Month (WHM) celebrations.

Professor Bernadette Warner, Executive Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness and Institutional Research at UCC delivered the official message for International Women' Day. In her presentation Professor Warner first acknowledged women around the world who have taken a "bold stand despite the often overwhelming odds against them" such as Anielle FrancoMinister for Racial Equality in Brazil’s new government,  who was "catalyzed to act by the murder of her sister" and Iranian Journalist Masih Alinejad, who "fled to the USA in 2009, after exposing corruption in her home country, and who remains actively defiant."

'There will be challenges but also days of glorious victory' — Dr Haldane Davies

 

The year 2023 will have challenges but also glorious victory based on plans to expand the footprint of the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC), its President Dr Haldane Davies has forecast.

Delivering his "State of the University" address at their main campus in Kingston on January 13, Dr Davies reported on the advances made by the UCC in 2022 and plans for further growth and development in 2023.

"The UCC has accomplished great things since its inception. As times change and opportunities expand, we have even greater heights to achieve. I am truly thankful for you and the potential that you possess to traverse the unbeaten path, create new access points, and propel this university from good to great," he told faculty and students.

US/Caribbean Educator is new UCC Provost

 

 

Dr. Sheilah Marion Paul, a United States (US)/Caribbean educator, has been named Provost of the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC). Dr Paul's career has seen her making her mark in Trinidad and Tobago and elsewhere in the region. She has spent the past 15 years on a professional journey, moving from instructor to lecturer, assistant professor, associate professor, and professor of education at prestigious US universities.

In making the announcement Dr Haldane Davies, president of the institution of higher education said that "the UCC is immensely pleased to welcome a daughter of the Caribbean who has distinguished herself as an educator throughout the Caribbean as well as in the United States of America."
