To apply, students must be a (new applicant) to UCC, submit the following documents to UCC by [March 1 to June 30 deadline] for the Summer/ Fall semester:

(i)   The UCC application for admission, qualification certificate/s, transcripts (which may be unofficial)
(ii)  Proof of person e.g. birth certificate/ gov issued ID
(iii) 1 passport size photograph


1) Eligibility:

  • The scholarship is open to new students (admitted to UCC effective Summer 2025) who are/ were members of a Kiwanis Service Leadership Club while in high school
  • Applicants must be admitted to an undergraduate program at the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC)
  • Students from the following regions are eligible to apply: Eastern Canada (including provinces such as Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and the Atlantic Provinces) and the Caribbean (including but not limited to Jamaica).

2) Academic Performance:

  • If the applicant is transferring from another tertiary institution, the applicant must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent.
  • For the first time tertiary applicants, applicant must meet the full acceptance matriculation criteria for the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean

3) lnvolvement in Kiwanis Service Leadership Club:

  • Demonstrate active involvement in the Kiwanis Service Leadership Club, including holding a leadership position at the club or district level.
  • Provide a detailed list of Service Leadership Club activities and community service projects in which they have participated.
  • Include any recognition or awards received for their service within the Service Leadership Club or other community service organizations. (Verification of service club position held)

4)   Essay Requirements:

  • Submit an essay (500-750 words) discussing their experience in the Kiwanis Service Leadership Club and how it has shaped their character and aspirations.
  • Explain how their involvement aligns with the mission of the Kiwanis Service Leadership Club and how they plan to continue serving their community through their education at UCC (include what impact they see to have in the UCC Community).

5)  Community Service Record:

  • Show evidence of a strong commitment to community service with a focus on helping children and improving the community.
  • Provide at least two letters of recommendation from community organizations that have benefited from their service.
  • Detail the number of hours served and the impact their service has had on the community.

6) Financial Need:

  • Applicants must demonstrate financial need for the scholarship.

7) Character Reference:

  • Provide at least one character reference from a non-family member, such as a teacher, counselor or Kiwanis advisor, who can attest to the applicant's leadership skills, community involvement, and overall character.

8) Interview Process:

  • Finalists may be required to participate in a virtual or in-person interview with the scholarship selection committee to discuss their application, community service, and future goals. (Interview Committee to include two Kiwanis Representatives)

9) Maintaining Scholarship Eligibility:

  • Recipients must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher (and an overall 30 hours of service hours) to remain eligible for scholarship renewal.
  • An awardee is eligible for a maximum of two awards for the duration of their studies.in any programme at the UCC.
  • Students must continue to be active in community service during their university studies (10 hours of service per semester).

10) Application Procedure:

  • Applicants must complete the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean Scholarship Application Form.
  • Submit all required documents and essays through the UCC's scholarship email scholarships@ucc.edu.im, Online only to the specified address.
  • The submission of applications will open on March 1, 2025 and deadline for receiving applications is April 15, of each year.

11) Selection Criteria:

  • The scholarship will include a weighting scale and will be awarded based on a combination of academic performance, community service, leadership experience, and financial need.
  • The selection committee will prioritize students who have made significant contributions to their communities through the Kiwanis Service Leadership Club and who demonstrate the potential to be leaders in their chosen field.
  • The decision of the scholarship committee is final and is not subject to appeal.

12) Award Amount and Duration:

Scholarship. Up to Ten (10) Awardees/students admitted will be offered the non- cash award value of:

  1. Option 1: $456,000 JMD per year for Jamaican scholars i.e. Two awardees per year from Jamaica, the awardees will cover miscellaneous fees.
  2. Option 2: $342,000 JMD (75% tuition fees) per year for non-Jamaican scholars i.e. One per year from each island, the awardees will need to cover all miscellaneous expenses and remaining tuition.

​*The award is transferable from one island to another if for some reason there is no applicant from a particular country/island.

 

Disclaimer: Awardees must not have outstanding debt to the UCC. Scholarship is for tuition only and may not be redeemed for cash and is non transferrable. Scholarships do not cover miscellaneous fees, books, supplemental exams, re-sits, repeat foundation courses, etc.
