UCC Single Module Certificate Course
This course focuses on developing students’ ability to communicate in French.
Students will understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Students will introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Students will be able to interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
Students will understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment); communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters; describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need; describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
After successfully completing this course, students should be able to:
- Respond appropriately to spoken forms of French in everyday situations, for example, questions and directions;
- Identify the main points of a conversation and a continuous passage;
- Use appropriate pronunciation and intonation when reading in French;
- Respond appropriately to simple written statements and instructions in French in everyday situations, for example, questions and directions;
- Answer basic questions based on a continuous passage or dialogue, factual reports, written explanations, or other graphic stimuli;
- Respond appropriately to basic written material in French using everyday situations;
- Give basic explanations, directions and descriptions;
- Request explanations, directions and descriptions;
- Participate in basic conversations based on everyday topics or an interview;
- Respond orally in everyday situations in a manner acceptable to native speakers.
