UCC Single Module Certificate Course
Rationale
This course provides an introduction to computer information essentials. Its main purpose is to give students an appreciation of what computers can do and how information technology can assist in the solution of business/technical problems. This course does not assume computer literacy and serves as the foundation for all other information technology courses. At the end of this course the student may go on to sit the CompTIA IT Fundamentals exam. This certification can be used to pursue the certification, CompTIA ITF+ (IT Fundamentals +).
Course Description
This introductory course aimed to provide a foundation level understanding of Information Technology. The main concepts covered the identification and explanation of basic computer components, set up a basic workstation, conduct of basic software installation, establishment of basic network connectivity, the identification of compatibility issues and the prevention of basic security risks. In the practical section of the course students will get hands-on experience using office productivity tools and setup a basic workstation.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES
At the end of this course students should be able to:
- Discuss key computer concepts and terminology
- Describe the impact of computers on society.
- Identify hardware found in or attached to computing devices.
- Identify software installed on computing devices.
- Understand the key features of the various operating systems.
- Explain and configure computer network.
- Understand the security of computing devices.
- Use application software such as word processors, presentation graphics and the Internet to enhance workplace productivity.
- Create and manipulate simple models of real world situations using spreadsheets and file management programs.
Develop a robust foundation in information technology, encompassing computer systems, networks, databases, software development, cybersecurity, and information management, along with understanding technological infrastructure, enterprise systems, requirements analysis, project management, and IT resource management. |

Discuss the emerging trends and technologies in information technology, such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and data analytics, and evaluate their potential applications and implications within organisational contexts |
