This course introduces students to the rich tradition of Western orchestral music, from the Baroque era to the present day. Through guided listening, historical and cultural exploration, and analytical activities, students will engage with major orchestral forms, composers, and stylistic movements. By the end of the course, students will be able to attend orchestral concerts—live or virtual —with a clear understanding of what they are hearing, and discuss the music with intelligence, confidence, and a well-developed critical ear.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Identify key composers, periods, and styles in orchestral music.
- Understand the structure and characteristics of orchestral forms such as the symphony, concerto, overtures and oratorios.
- Analyze musical elements including melody, harmony, rhythm, timbre, and texture in orchestral works.
- Examine the cultural, political, and social influences that shaped the development of orchestral music.
- Listen critically to live and recorded orchestral music and articulate informed responses.
- Confidently discuss musical works in both informal conversation and formal critique.
This course is open-entry. There are no prerequisites for entry.
